Wariona saharae
affesass speciesWarionia saharae, known in the Berber language as afessas is a member of the Aster or Asteracae family and is endemic to Algeria and Morocco.
- It is an aromatic, thistle-like shrub ½–2 m high, that contains a white latex.
- Leaves are fleshy, pinnately compound, wavy, alternate, 2–13 cm long and 1–3 cm wide, oblong to oblanceolate. The youngest plants can be in a rosette of oblanceolate, dentate leaves. The plant is not thorny or prickly.
- The aggregate flower heads contain erect yellow disk florets, standing individually at the tip of the stems or with two or three together, each 3–4 cm long, 4½–6 cm wide and containing disk florets only. Flowering is from April until June.
- The plant has a light brown taproot somewhat resembling a parsnip.
