The mastic-leaf-like prickly ash is in the citrus or Rutaceae family, natively occurring in southeastern China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and south and central Japan. It is a shrub 1–2 m tall; stems and branchlets have prickles.

It is one of several species of Zanthoxylum from which Sichuan pepper is produced.

  • Leaves are pinnate with 7–19 leaflets, leaflet blades opposite, or alternate toward base of rachis, broadly ovate or lanceolate, 5–10 cm long and 4–6 cm across, papery, base symmetrical or sometimes obliquely rounded, margin serrate, apex mucronate to acuminate.
  • Flowers are 5-numerous, terminal, petals pale yellowish white, flowering July to September.
  • Fruit follicles are reddish brown but dark green to brownish black when dry, 4–5 mm in diameter, ripening in September to December.
