Kalmia angustifolia
sheep speciesSheep laurel or is in the heath or Ericaceae family. It is distributed in eastern North America from Ontario and Quebec in Canada and south to Virginia in the US. The plant can varies in height from 0.3–1.5 m.
- Leaves are evergreen, usually in whorls of 3, rarely alternate or opposite; petiole is 6-16 mm long, usually pubescent; blade is oblong to elliptic-lanceolate, 1.5–8 long and 0.5–2.5 cm acrosss, margins usually plain, apex obtuse to acute.
- Flowers are attractive, small, deep crimson-pink, produced in racemes of 4–12-flowers in early summer. Each has five sepals, with a corolla of five fused petals, and ten stamens fused to the corolla.
- Seed capsules are 5-locular, 2–3.5 cm long and 3–5 mm across.
