EuphorbiaceaeVernicia

The mu oil tree or chine wood oil tree is in the euphorbia or Euphorbiaceae family and is native to Southeast Asia (including Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam), southern China, and Taiwan. It can reach up to 20 m tall.

  • Leaves are large with 3–5 lobes.
  • The tree is monoecious; flowers are white-petaled inflorescences, containing both male and female flowers.
  • Fruit is a globular drupe 5.1–7.5 cm across, with wrinkled skin that turns from green to yellow upon ripening. Each fruit contains 3 seeds, rich in oil.
  • The tree is grown mostly for the seeds from which a varnish is made, similar to the tong oil tree (Vernica fordii). The oil is called abrasin oil or Chinese wood oil.
