Florida speciesThe Florida anise tree or purple anise is in the Schisandraceae family and is native the southeastern United States and northern Mexico. It is a shrub, growing up to 3 m tall.
- Leaves are evergreen, smooth, glossy, elliptic, dark olive-green, up to 15 cm long, emiting an anise-like aroma when crushed.
- Flowers are dark red, up to 5 cm in diameter, each with 20–30 strap-shaped petals, blooming in April-May.
- Fruit is a star-shaped cluster of follicles.
