The Chinese anise tree or Henry anise is in the Schisandraceae family and is native to China (the provinces of Anhui, Fujian, Gansu, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Shaanxi, Sichuan and Yunnan). As an ornamental shrub, it grows up to 4.6 m tall.

  • Leaves are evergreen, simple, leathery, lanceolate to obovate, 6-15 cm long, 1-5 cm wide, highly aromatic when bruised, tip pointed, base tapering to a fine wedge, margin entire, glabrous and glossy dark green above and paler below, petiole green, 1-2 cm long.
  • Flowers are cupped, to 2 cm in diameter, waxy, copper to dark red, 10-14 petals (tepals), elliptic to obovate, with 11-28 stamens.
  • Fruit is 1.5-5.5 cm long, with 7-9 follicles; it is poisonous.
