Illicium anisatum

The Japanese anise tree or Japanese star anise is in the Schisandraceae family and is native to Japan and Taiwan. It is an evergreen shrub growing up to 4.6 m tall.

It is often found planted around Buddhist temples in Japan.

The fruit is not edible, and in fact is highly toxic.
