Exochorda giraldii
common speciesThe common pearbush is in the rose or Rosaceae family and originates in China and Korea. It is a shrub grown for its attractive white flowers and good plant form.
- Leaves are deciduous, alternate, simple, paddle-shaped oval, 3–9 cm long, with an entire or bluntly serrated margin.
- Flower buds resemble white pearls, hence the common name, with the buds opening into flowers with 5 frilly petals at the first hint of spring.
- Fruit is a dry coccetum of 5 fused carpels which split to release flattened seeds.
- E. giraldii var. wilsonii has flowers that are larger than in the typical variety.
