Turkey oak is native to south-eastern Europe and Asia Minor. It is in the turkey oak group (Cerris), in the beech or Fagaceae family. It is closely related to sawtooth oak.

  • Leaves alternate, simple, glossy, oblong , shallowly lobed and coarsely toothed, 7–14 cm long and 3–5 cm wide, with 6–12 triangular lobes on each side. They are rough in texture and remain on the trees late into the fall turning from glossy dark green to orange.
  • Acorns are up to 3.5 cm long, 2 cm across, the cap having a soft bristles characteristic of the Turkey oak group of species. The acorns mature in 18 months.
