Euptelea pleiosperma is the sole species in the the Eupteleaceae family. It is a shrub or small tree native to east Asia, including parts of China, India and Myanmar. It can reach a height of up to 12 m tall.

  • Branchlets are purple-black to gray, glabrous.
  • Leaves are deciduous, broadly ovate, 5–10 cm long and 3.6–7.5 cm wide, wedge-shaped at the base, the point long and narrow, the margins irregularly toothed, green above, green or grey beneath; the stalk is 2–6 cm long, glabrescent.
  • Floral bracts are elliptic, early deciduous; pedicel 3–-5 mm long; stamens 0.8–1.9 cm long; filaments are filiform to slightly flattened; anthers red, narrowly oblong, longer than filaments, dehiscent by longitudinal slits, connective apically with a 0.7--2 mm appendage. Carpels are 1–3 mm long; stigma is white, ventral to distal.
  • Fruit is a flat samara, notched on one side, on a slender stalk 1.3 cm long, 1–3-seeded.
