Quercus vaccinifolia

Huckleberry oak is in the beech or Fagaceae family, and is native to the western United States, in the Sierra Nevada of California, from just into Nevada and the Klamath Mountains and southern Cascade Range, and north to southern Oregon. It is a shrub growing to 1.5 m tall, never growing into a tree.

• Leaves are semi-evergreen, oval-lanceolate, grey-green, 3–7 cm long and 1.5–4 cm broad, with a coarsely serrated margin with 6-12 pairs of sharply pointed teeth.
• Flowering occurs in May-June.
• Fruit is an acorn 2.7–4.5 cm long 1.8-2.4 cm in diameter, enclosing 2/3 of the nut in a scaly acorn cup, maturing in 2 years.
• Bark is reddish grey-brown; twigs are thin, gray-brown, pubescent at first, becoming glabrous, with brownish, round lenticels.
