Taroko oak is in the beech or Fagaceae family, and is native to eastern Taiwan, China. It is usually a shrub but can reach 12 m tall.

  • Leaves are evergreen, narrowly oval, leathery, 2–4 cm long and 1.5–2.8 cm across, apex pointed, 3-5 pairs of teeth on the outer ½ of the leaf, both faces hairless, but sometimes stellate hairs along the midrib beneath, petiole 3–5 mm long.
  • Flowering occurs in June-July.
  • Fruit is an oval-shaped acorn, 1.4–1.8 cm long, 1-1.4 cm wide, enclosed ¼ to ½ by a cup ; maturing in 2 years.
  • Bark is reddish grey-brown; twigs are thin, gray-brown, pubescent at first, becoming glabrous, with brownish, round lenticels.
