Pyrenean oak is in the beech or Fagaceae family, and is native to southwestern Europe and northwestern Africa, being rarely found in Pyrenees Mountains, despite its common name. It is abundant in northern Portugal and north and northwestern Spain. It can reach about 20 m in height.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, up to 8–20 cm long and 4–12 cm wide and are deeply and irregularly lobed, with four to eight pairs of lobes per leaf; petioles are short. Stellate hairs are found on both sides of the leaf. Leaves are marcescent, turning brown but remaining on the tree all winter until new leaves emerge in the spring.
