Brown oak or yellow-backed oakis in the turkey oak group (Cerris), in the beech or Fagaceae family, and is native to India, Nepal, Afghanistan, North Tibet and Myanmar. It can reach up to 20m in height.

  • Leaves are evergreen, alternate, simple, ovate or elliptic, 2–6 cm long and 1.5–4 cm broad, entire or spiked-serrated and with a short petiole, with apex and base rounded; leaf top is green, bottom rusty yellowish, densely covered with brown hairs.
  • Species is monoecious; male inflorescences are 3–10 cm long, female inflorescences 2–3 cm long; flowering is in May–June.
  • Fruit is an ovate or nearly spherical acorn 1-1.5 cm in diameter, apex slightly hairy or glabrous, cap 1–2 cm in diameter, covering 1/3–1/2 of the acorn; the bracts of the shell are narrowly ovate, about 1 mm long, the top is covered with brown fluff.
