Symplocos paniculata
Asiatic speciesAsiatic sweetleaf or sapphire-berry is a tree in the Symplocaceae family and is native to all of eastern Asia. It is a small tree or multi-stemmed shrub that typically reaches up to 7 m tall, with a spreading habit.
- Leaves are deciduous, ovate to obovate, 7–8 cm long and 2–4.5 cm wide, tapering at both ends, finely toothed, dark green, slightly hairy above, more so on the veins beneath; stalk is 3–8 mm long, hairy.
- Flowers are fragrant, white, 5 petals, 8 mm across, produced in 5.0–7.5 cm hairy panicles in late May and early June.
- Fruit is a slightly oval, sapphire-blue berry, forming in clusters in the fall; colour can be somewhat variable over its wide range.
