Meliosma myriantha
Japanese speciesJapanese meliosma is in the Sabiaceae family and is native to Japan and the Korean archipelago. It is a shrub or small tree with spreading habit, growing up to 6 m tall.
- Leaves are deciduous, simple, oval-lanceolate, 7.5–20 cm long and 3.7–7.5 cm across, regularly toothed, midrib covered with reddish-brown hairs, veins parallel, as in a sweet chestnut; apex is a short point; petiole is 1.3–2.5 cm long.
- Flowers are minute (about 3 mm diameter), very numerous, yellowish white, very fragrant, in terminal panicles 15 cm or more in length and width, much branched.
- Fruit is a round, dark red drupe 6–7 mm in diameter, on a crowded panicle.
