Brown oak is in the white oak group (Quercus), in the beech or Fagaceae family, and is native to southern, central, and eastern China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. It is a medium-sized tree growing up to 25 m in height.

  • Leaves are deciduous, simple, leathery, elliptical in shape, up to 17 cm long by 9 cm wide, with serrated margins; leaves are densely covered with fine hairs when young, becoming glabrous with age; petioles are up to 3 cm long.
  • Species is monoecious; pistillate (female) inflorescences are 1.5–3 cm long, occurring in March to April.
  • Fruit is an oval-shaped acorn, 1.7–2 cm long, maturing in 1 year; its cup has fine hairs and triangular-shaped scales covering 1/4 to 1/3 of the acorn.
  • Bark is grey or reddish-brown, with longitudinal furrows.
