Japanese hawthorne or Chinese hawthorn is in the rose or Rosaceae family and is a compact shrub or small tree native China but also widely cultivated in Japan, growing to 15 m tall.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, 2.5–6.3 cm long 1.2–3 cm wide, pale bright green, and soon quite glabrous above; slightly hairy beneath, obovate or somewhat spoon-shaped, much tapered and entire at the base, the apex rounded or abruptly tapered, moderately lobed and toothed; petiole is 1.3 cm long; stipules are semi-heart-shaped, coarsely toothed, 1.2 cm long.
  • Flowers are white, 1.2–2 cm across, produced during May and June in few-flowered corymbs; stalks are hairy.
  • Fruit is globose or slightly pear-shaped, red or yellow, 1.2 -1.4 cm in diameter.
  • Thorns are found along the branches are about 6 mm long.
