Lithocarpus variolosus
variable-leaved speciesVariable-leaved stone-oak is a tree species in the beech or Fagaceae family, found in China (southwest Sichuan and northwest Yunnan provinces) and in Vietnam. It grows to about 20 m in height.
- Branchlets are blackish and covered in greyish brown lenticels.
- Leaf blade is ovate to elliptic or lanciolate, 6–15 cm long and 3–7 cm broad, leathery to thick and papery, upper surface glabrous, lower surface glaucous and with thick, waxy, scale-like trichomes, 6–10 secondary veins on each side of the midrib, tertiary veins inconspicuous on lower leaf surface, margins entire, apex acuminate and falcate, petiole 1–1.5 cm long.
- Trees are monoecious; staminate flowers are in panicles 5–7 cm long, or are solitary; pistillate flowers are in terminal clusters 3–6 cm long; flowering is from May to July. Nut is globose and with a depressed apex, 1–2 cm long; cup is 0.6–1.8 cm diameter, covered with reddish or greyish brown, triangular bracts, enclosing from half to almost all of the nut; maturing of fruit is from July to September of the following year.
