Catalpa x erubescens
hybrid speciesHybrid catalpa is in the bignonia or Bignoniaceae family and is a hybrid of C. bignoniodes × C. ovata, likely originating in France in the mid-1800s, but the hybrid has occurred at other places and times. C. × e. ‘Purpurea’ is the most common hybrid cultivar.
- Leaves are 25–40 cm long, often with 3 shallow, tapered lobes, leaves maturing to dark green.
- Flowers are white, marked with yellow and purple, in upright clusters 30 cm tall.
- Fruit is a slender pod up to 40 cm long.
