Catalpa bungei
Manchurian speciesManchurian catalpa is in the bignonia or Bignoniaceae family and is native to the China. It may grow up to 12 m tall.
- Leaves are opposite, simple, 6–15 cm long and 5–10 cm broad, long-stalked (petiole 2–8 cm long), large and heart shaped at the base, occasionally lobed, tapering-pointed at the tip. The foliage emerges downy, green late in spring and turns to bright green and smooth above, paler green and downy below; leaves turn yellow in autumn.
- Flowers are arranged in 2-12-flowered corymbs, flowers 2.5–4 cm across, showy, trumpet shaped, white, densely spotted with pink.
- Fruit is a long, thin hanging bean pod 25–45 cm long and 6 mm diameter; it often stays attached to tree during winter; pod contains numerous flat light brown seeds.
