Carpinus tschonoskii
Chonowski's speciesChonowski's hornbeam is in the birch or Betulaceae family and is native to China, Japan and Korea. It can reach a height of 25 m.
In the Flora of China, it is referred to as C. tschonoskii var. falcatibracteata, or C. falcatibrateata. Another hornbeam, Carpinus henryana is referred to as C. tschonoskii var. henryana.
- Leaf is alternate, simple, oblong, double-toothed and tapered at the tip, up to 12 cm long and 5 cm across. Veins are opposite and straight, inset, giving a distinctive corrugated texture.
- Male and female catkins appear in spring at the same time as the leaves. Females are small, green, at the tips of shoots, on the same plant as males.
- Fruit is a small 7–8 mm long nut, partially surrounded by a pendulous strings of 3-pointed leafy, toothed bracts to 6 cm long (note distinct appearance); the bracts mature in autumn, turning brown with some remaining on the tree over winter.
